The Atelier

A small house for great cloth.

BY SEEMA keeps no inventory in the usual sense. What arrives is hand-worked: chikankari, gota patti, resham embroidery and zardozi from workrooms in Delhi and Lucknow, a jamdani from the Banaras looms, a patola weave from Gujarat. It is kept only because Seema would wear it herself.

Only a handful at a time. Every one handmade, every one singular. When a piece finds its home it is marked sold and stays in the archive; it will not be repeated.

Resham Embroidery

Coloured silk thread worked freehand: vines, blossom, birds, whole gardens set into cotton and georgette.

Chikankari

White thread worked into white cloth, legible only when the light moves across it.

Gota Patti

Flat gold ribbon folded and laid into the cloth rather than stitched in thread.

Zardozi

Metal thread couched by hand over a frame; the oldest and slowest of the gold crafts.

Jamdani

Extra thread laid in by hand as the silk is woven, so the flowers sit inside the cloth, not on it.

Gujarat

Patola Weave

Motifs carried inside the weave rather than printed onto it, closed with a zari-striped border.
